Is Jaguar Better than Audi?

Asking which is the better choice, a Jaguar or an Audi, is a little like asking a parent to name their favorite child. Or asking a child to choose between a boisterous, fun-loving uncle or a stern but nurturing aunt. Each invites an unreasonable comparison.

That said, most parents secretly have a favorite child, most children would choose the uncle, and most performance-minded drivers will choose Jaguar over Audi any day of the week. (For the record, I imagine my high-spirited uncle driving a bright red Jaguar convertible down a dramatic stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway, while his sister—my sensible aunt—would be driving around town in a dark gray Audi, both hands gripping the wheel and never above the posted speed limit.

Needless-to-say, each of these automotive brands is well-known for its high-end luxury appeal. Push luxury aside, however, and most people cite performance as their chief reason for choosing Jaguar. As one gentleman put it, “Whatever you could possibly find lacking in a Jaguar is more than made up by its outlandish good looks and a drive that will plaster a grin across your face. Jaguars exude personality and performance that their German-made rivals simply don’t possess.”

Not that Jaguar doesn’t have its sensible side. In a pioneering innovation borrowed from the aerospace industry, Jaguar was the first luxury car to offer an aluminum chassis, which improved fuel efficiency by reducing vehicle weight by over 40%. Less weight also improved vehicle performance and crash safety, while reducing CO2 emissions.

In a recent ranking of the top 10 luxury cars with aluminum frames—conducted by < a href="https://www.autoweb.com/">AutoWeb (formerly Autobytel)—the top ranking was awarded to the Jaguar XE . It is also credited for being the most affordable. The Jaguar XJ is ranked 6th. The Audi A8L is 7th,

In more recent news, Jaguar-Land Rover announced last February that all cars made under the Jaguar name will be fully electric by 2025, leading most other marquee luxury brands in transitioning to battery operated vehicles.

In the fast-emerging category of luxury electric vehicles—which had once been the exclusive preserve of Tesla—Jaguar has debuted the i-Pace while Audi offers the comparable e-Tron. Both are premium priced, come with standard all-wheel drive, are sufficiently roomy, and drive fast and nimbly.

More importantly, the i-Pace has a higher operating range than the e-Tron, at 234 miles versus 204 miles, according to a side-by-side comparison conducted by Motor1.com. It also costs about $5,000 less and offers a lengthier warranty.

In other side-by-side comparisons with Audi—as well as other vehicles in the luxury space—Jaguar generally performs as well, if not better, than most of its competitors. In terms of looks and styling, however, Jaguar always emerges on top, especially if you also want the most engaging driving experience.

In the end, however, it all comes down to which luxury brand you prefer. Test drive the Jaguar of your choice, then try a comparable model Audi. We have a pretty good idea which of the two driving experiences will leave you with a grin plastered across your face.
